The Fisherman is a Ghanaian film that has captured hearts and awards around the globe. It’s an inspiring, yet critical, story that highlights pressing global issues like plastic pollution, the depletion of sea life, and the struggles of small fishermen against commercial ships. Yet, at its core, it’s also a delightful tale of family, dreams, and the enduring spirit of a true fisherman.
Directed by Zoey Martinson, this Venice Film Festival-winning comedy introduces us to the aging Ghanaian fisherman Atta Oko. His dream is simple: to finally own his own boat and become the envy of his fishing village. The catch? He’ll need a little help from a talking fish first!
The film is filled with laughter, magic, and the vibrant culture of Ghana, brought to life by a talented cast including Ricky Adelayitar, Fred Amugi, and William Lamptey, among many others.
The team behind the movie is equally impressive, with Kofi Owusu-Afriyie and Korey Jackson as Producers, and Yvonne Orji serving as Executive Producer. The film is a collaboration between Luu Vision Media, Smoke & Mirrors Collaborative, and F.A.M. Creative.
The Fisherman has not only entertained but has been recognized by major festivals worldwide, winning approximately 12 awards. Its accolades include:
