Disney+ is set to unveil the highly praised documentary “MADU,” recounting the remarkable journey of Anthony Madu, a Nigerian ballet dancer whose fame skyrocketed through a viral video. Scheduled for release on March 29, 2024, the film, directed by Matt Ogens and Kachi Benson, chronicles Madu’s transition from Lagos to the esteemed Elmhurst Ballet School in the UK, delving into themes of self-discovery, personal growth, and the pursuit of acceptance and belonging.
At just 13 years old, Madu captivated global audiences with his dancing prowess when a video of him gracefully performing in the rain circulated widely in 2020, notably shared by actress Viola Davis. This exposure earned him a scholarship to the Elmhurst Ballet School, where he faced initial challenges adapting to his new surroundings but eventually flourished, embracing the demanding ballet training and academic opportunities afforded to him.
The documentary aims to shed light on Madu’s endeavors to popularize ballet in Nigeria and serve as a source of inspiration for others aspiring to pursue their passions.
While Disney+ is accessible in six African countries, including South Africa, unfortunately, Nigeria—Madu’s home country—will not be among them on March 29, 2024.
