Kobina De Graft-Johnson’s natural eye for storytelling was first recognized through his casual iPhone photography at after-work events. That passion quickly evolved into a professional journey, leading him to contribute to several of Anibok Studios’ notable projects, including “Kwesi & Efe” and “Seguwa” (both streaming on YouTube), as well as “Chain Link” and “Barely Made,” which are currently making rounds in the international festival circuit.
As the founder, CEO, and director of photography at Anibok Studios, Kobina is now building a visionary catalogue of 100 films, each designed to elevate and reshape the cinematic representation of Ghanaian and Ameri-African culture.
His latest project, “King of T3MA,” is a gripping crime drama series set in the bustling port city of Tema. The idea for the film was conceived in 2019 during Kobina’s visit to Ghana for the Year of Return, born out of his fascination with Tema’s hidden underworld—a landscape marked by loyalty, survival, and the shadowy corridors of drug trafficking through its port.
Director and Producer Kobina de Graft-Johnson notes that the film is a deeply personal project, stating that Tema is “more than a backdrop; it’s my home.” His intention was to capture the “grit, resilience, and everyday struggles” of the people and to prove that stories born in Ghana can “resonate globally.”
“We’re not rewriting Ghana’s story; we’re extending it,” said de Graft-Johnson. “Tema has always been a city of builders; now we’re building our stories on screen.”
Described as a cinematic tribute to the industrial city and a continuation of Ghana’s storytelling heritage, the film explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and redemption against a gritty backdrop where ambition, faith, and survival collide.
Anibok Studios, in association with Organized Khaoz Productions, released the official trailer for “King of Tɛma”, which has been touted as the first feature film produced from Tema, by Tema, and about Tema. Set entirely in the city, it is also the first feature film conceived, written, directed, and produced by a native of Tema. The director said the project celebrates authenticity, collaboration, and local pride while introducing a bold new cinematic voice. Media personality Ivy Prosper described the trailer as “raw, authentic storytelling from Tema to the world,” noting its distinct style and emotional depth.
