“BORGA†features Emmanuel Affadzi, Fred Nii Amugi, Adjetey Anang, Lydia Forson, Joseph Otsiman, Eugene Boateng, Christiane Paul and Jude Arnold Kurankyi. The film is a collaboration of Ghanaian and German filmmakers which was shot in 2018, finally set to be premiered in Ghana.
The film’s title is taken from Ghanaian word “BORGA†which describes people who have moved abroad to make money. The film tells the story of a Ghanaian migrant who wants to make it big in Europe. But the reality of his new life in Germany largely shatters those dreams. It has already screened in Germany and successfully run in festivals.
Speaking at a virtual press conference held on Sunday June 5, 2022, the film’s Director York-Fabian Raabe shared, “It’s like the reception was really good. The way this film was made, it is not typical in the western film world. People sometimes have prejudice about these sorts of films and when they see it, they realize this is something different and from a unique perspertiveâ€
Also speaking at the virtual event, the Ghanaian-German discovery of the year Eugene Boateng (Lead actor) said, “I think this film has already made quite an impact. So many people can relate to it. It is telling a universal story out of a Ghanaian perspective with a Ghanaian lead actor which is an international project, it means a lot to everyone that has seen itâ€.
The film has already won several awards both home and international. 8 awards out of the 18 nominations it had at the Ghana Movie Awards 2022, including “Best Pictureâ€, “Best Director†and “Best Cinematographyâ€
BORGA is produced by German production companies Chromosom Film and East End Film as well as well as Ghanaian/U.K. production company TD Afrique.
